In the Electric Mist is a crime drama based on James Lee Burke's novel of the same name. The movie stars Tommy Lee Jones as Detective Dave Robicheaux, who is haunted by the memory of a murder he witnessed as a young boy. As an adult, Robicheaux is determined to solve the murder, and his investigation leads him to a sinister network of organized crime.
Meanwhile, Robicheaux is also investigating the murder of a local prostitute, whom he suspects was killed by mobster Julie Balboni (played by John Goodman). Balboni is a co-producer of a Civil War movie being filmed in Louisiana, and Robicheaux believes that the murder is connected to the movie.
As Robicheaux delves deeper into both investigations, he is aided by a mysterious ghostly figure played by Levon Helm, the late drummer for The Band. Together, they uncover a web of corruption and violence that threatens to engulf them both.
The movie was directed by French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier and also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Mary Steenburgen, Kelly Macdonald, and Ned Beatty. It was released in 2009 to generally positive reviews.
