Norman's Last Stand: A Romantic Theatre Tale

Comedy  United Kingdom

In Love with Alma Cogan is a British comedy-drama film directed by Tony Britten and released in 2012. The film stars Roger Lloyd-Pack as Norman, Niamh Cusack as Sandra and Isabel Ruth as Maria. The story is set in the fictional seaside town of Worthing and revolves around a struggling pier theatre that is on the verge of being taken over by a commercial management company.

Norman, the manager of the pier theatre, is a lifelong fan of Alma Cogan, a popular British singer from the 1950s and 60s who died young. He is haunted by her ghost and talks to her regularly as he struggles to keep the theatre afloat against increasing pressure from the local council to modernize and appeal to a younger audience.

Sandra, Norman's assistant, is also a fan of Alma Cogan and dreams of becoming a singer. She is devoted to Norman and helps him keep the theatre running despite mounting debt and dwindling ticket sales. When Norman finally decides to retire and leave the theatre, Sandra decides to follow her dream and pursue a career as a professional singer.

As Sandra prepares for her first big performance, she meets Maria, an older woman who knew Alma Cogan and who becomes her mentor and friend. Norman, meanwhile, begins a tentative romance with Maria's daughter, Lisa, and finally finds happiness after years of loneliness and disappointment.

The film features a soundtrack of Alma Cogan's greatest hits, performed by Niamh Cusack and other cast members. It was praised by critics for its charming characters, witty dialogue and nostalgic portrayal of a bygone era of British entertainment.
