Three French tourists by the sea

Drama  South Korea

In Another Country is a South Korean movie directed by Hong Sang-soo and released in 2012. The movie is a series of three stories that share similar themes and characters, all taking place in the same seaside resort in South Korea.

The first story follows a French film director named Anne (Isabelle Huppert), who visits the resort with her Korean friend, Joon-sang (Moon Seong-geun). Anne is struggling with writer's block and begins to write a screenplay based on her experiences at the resort, including an affair with a lifeguard named Jong-soo (Yu Jun-sang).

In the second story, a French woman named Isabelle (also played by Isabelle Huppert) visits the resort with her husband, Jean (Yoon Yeo-jeong). Isabelle struggles with her deteriorating relationship with Jean and finds solace in her conversations with the resort's owner, who becomes infatuated with her.

The third story follows a young, French student named Anne (Jung Yoo-mi), who is on a trip with her mother. Anne meets Jong-soo while at the resort and begins to develop feelings for him, leading to a passionate night together.

Throughout the movie, the three stories intertwine as characters from one story appear in another, creating a cohesive narrative. In Another Country explores themes of love, relationships, and the difficulties of communication across different cultures and languages. The movie received critical acclaim for its humor, wit, and unique storytelling.
