In Identity Thief, the mild-mannered businessman is named Sandy Patterson (played by Jason Bateman) and he lives in Denver with his wife and kids. After voluntarily giving his personal information to a woman over the phone who claims to work for one of his credit card companies, his identity is stolen by a con artist named Diana (played by Melissa McCarthy) who lives in Florida.
Sandy quickly realizes the gravity of the situation when he starts receiving bills for credit cards and loans he never applied for, and when the police refuse to help him, he decides to take matters into his own hands. He travels to Florida to confront Diana and bring her back to Denver to clear his name. However, things do not go as smoothly as he planned.
On the road trip to Denver, Sandy and Diana encounter a variety of obstacles and comedic mishaps, including a bounty hunter who mistakes Sandy for a wanted criminal and a violent encounter with some disgruntled former employees of Diana's. Despite their initial animosity towards each other, Sandy and Diana eventually form an unlikely bond and work together to outsmart the real villain and clear Sandy's name.
