Ida is a 2013 Polish film directed by Pawel Pawlikowski that follows the journey of Anna, a young novice who has been raised in a convent in Poland after her parents died during the Second World War. As she prepares to take her vows and become a nun, she is urged by her Mother Superior to meet with her only living relative, an aunt named Wanda.

Anna travels to Warsaw to stay with her aunt, who is a former state prosecutor known for her hard-line Communist stance. Wanda informs Anna that her parents were Jewish and that their real name was Lebenstein. She also reveals that her parents were killed during the war by Poles who betrayed them to the Nazis.

Together, Anna and Wanda embark on a journey to uncover the truth about their family's past and their own identities. As they travel through rural Poland, they encounter people who knew Anna's parents and learn about their experiences during the war.

The film explores themes of identity, family, and memory, as Anna struggles to come to terms with her newfound heritage and the painful history of her country. Shot in black and white with a minimalist style, Ida won numerous awards including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015.
