I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is a 1977 American drama film directed by Anthony Page. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Joanne Greenberg, which is a semi-autobiographical account of her own experiences as a patient in a mental hospital.
The film follows teenager Deborah Blau (Kathleen Quinlan), who is institutionalized in a mental hospital after attempting suicide. She retreats into a fantasy world called Yr, where she is a queen with magical powers and an army of followers. In Yr, she is able to escape her struggles with reality, including her strained relationship with her parents and her feelings of inadequacy.
As Deborah undergoes therapy with Dr. Fried (Bibi Andersson), she begins to confront her inner demons and gain a deeper understanding of herself. However, the line between fantasy and reality becomes increasingly blurred, as Deborah struggles to let go of Yr and face the challenges of the real world.
