I Love You to Death is a 1990 black comedy directed by Lawrence Kasdan and starring Kevin Kline, Tracey Ullman, River Phoenix, and Joan Plowright. The film is loosely based on the true story of Frances and Anthony Toto, who conspired to kill Anthony after discovering he had been unfaithful.
The film follows Joey and Rosalie Boca, a husband and wife who run a successful pizza parlor in Tacoma, Washington. Rosalie begins to suspect that Joey is cheating on her and seeks the advice of her mother, Nadja. Nadja encourages Rosalie to confront Joey, but they soon discover that Joey has been with multiple women and has even fathered a child with one of them.
Despite his infidelity, Rosalie still loves Joey and decides to take matters into her own hands. She recruits two of her friends, Devo and Harlan, to help her plan Joey's murder. The group attempts to poison Joey with pills, but he manages to survive and is hospitalized.
As the police investigate Joey's poisoning, Rosalie and her accomplices try to cover up their crime. However, they are eventually caught and brought to trial. In the end, Joey forgives Rosalie and they reconcile.
I Love You to Death received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for its dark humor and strong performances. The film was also notable for its talented cast, which included a young River Phoenix in one of his final roles before his death in 1993.
