Peter Klaven is a polite, conservative man who is about to get married to the woman of his dreams, Zooey. However, during the wedding planning process, he realizes that he has no close male friend to be his Best Man. He decides to go on a series of "man-dates" to find a suitable candidate, but he has no experience in establishing male relationships and finds himself in a series of awkward and embarrassing situations as he tries to bond with different men.

During his search, Peter meets a wild and charismatic man named Sydney Fife, who is everything Peter is not. Sydney is sarcastic, confident, and carefree, and the two men quickly become close friends. Sydney introduces Peter to his inner circle of friends, and Peter begins to enjoy their company. As Peter struggles to balance his old and new relationships, he finds himself torn between his responsibilities as a groom and his desire for genuine friendship.
