Kline, played by Josh Hartnett, is struggling with PTSD due to his time in the LAPD and is living in seclusion when he is approached by the pharmaceutical boss to find his son. Kline agrees to take the case and travels to Asia, where he teams up with a local detective, Binh, played by Tran Nu Yên-Khê.
As they investigate the disappearance, Kline and Binh encounter a variety of unique characters, including a charismatic cult leader played by Elias Koteas and a drug kingpin played by Lee Byung-hun. Along the way, Kline also confronts his own demons and memories of his past.
The film is directed by Vietnamese French filmmaker Anh Hung Tran and is known for its moody, atmospheric visuals and blending of genres such as crime thriller and psychological drama. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and received mixed reviews but has since gained a cult following among cinephiles.
