Hurlyburly is a 1998 drama film directed by Anthony Drazan and based on a play by David Rabe. The film follows the lives of several Hollywood players and wannabes, living in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s.
The main character is Eddie (Sean Penn), a drug-addicted casting director who shares a house with his best friend Mickey (Kevin Spacey), a successful but morally bankrupt producer. They are joined by their friend Phil (Chazz Palminteri), a struggling screenwriter, and their drug dealer Artie (Garry Shandling).
Eddie's girlfriend, the beautiful and troubled Darlene (Robin Wright), is a former model who now works as a stripper and is addicted to cocaine. As the film progresses, their relationships become increasingly volatile and dysfunctional, leading to conflicts, betrayals, and tragedies.
Other characters include Bonnie (Meg Ryan), Eddie's ex-girlfriend who is now dating Mickey, and Donna (Anna Paquin), a young actress who becomes involved with Eddie. The film deals with themes of addiction, loneliness, sexual abuse, and the corrosive effects of Hollywood on personal relationships.
Despite its strong cast and intense performances, Hurlyburly received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office disappointment. However, it has been praised for its frank portrayal of the dark side of Hollywood and its exploration of complex human relationships.
