Andie Anderson (played by Kate Hudson) is a columnist for a popular women's magazine called "Composure." Her editor, Lana (played by Bebe Neuwirth), is looking for some fresh, edgy content for the magazine and Andie comes up with an article idea about how to get a man to dump you in just 10 days. Lana thinks it's a great idea and gives Andie the green light to pursue it.
Meanwhile, Ben Berry (played by Matthew McConaughey) is an advertising executive for a diamond company called "Frost." His boss challenges him to come up with a new ad campaign that targets young women and their boyfriends. Ben decides to bet his boss that he can make any woman fall in love with him in just 10 days.
Andie and Ben cross paths at a bar and are immediately attracted to each other. Andie sees Ben as the perfect target for her article and decides to use him as her "test subject." She starts by doing some faux pas moves like being clingy, showing up uninvited to his basketball game, and picking out a hideous couch for him to buy without consulting him. She also names his... private part "Princess Sophia."
Ben, on the other hand, is working hard to win Andie over. He takes her on a trip to Staten Island, introduces her to his parents, and buys her a "love fern" (an endangered plant). Andie is determined to stick to her plan and make Ben dump her, so she continues to push his buttons, including making him take her to a Celine Dion concert, and announcing her love for him in front of his coworkers.
As their fake relationship continues, Andie starts to have real feelings for Ben, but is too proud to admit it. Ben, on the other hand, finds out about Andie's article and is hurt and angry. When Andie finally confesses her feelings to Ben, he tells her about his bet with his boss and leaves her.
In the end, Ben realizes his mistake and goes to Andie's office to make amends. They both admit they love each other and agree to give their relationship a real chance. Andie's article ends up being a huge success, but she refuses to publish it, realizing that she doesn't want to hurt anyone else's feelings in the process.
