The Grinch, who lives alone on Mount Crumpit with his loyal dog, Max, has a heart "two sizes too small" and despises everything about Christmas. He loathes the cheerful Whos, their joyous celebrations, and especially the loud noise of their Christmas festivities. To put a stop to all the noise and celebration, the Grinch resolves to steal Christmas from the Whos.
Disguised as Santa Claus, the Grinch sneaks into Whoville on Christmas Eve and begins stealing all the decorations, presents, and food. As he is making his escape, Cindy Lou Who catches him in the act and asks him why he is stealing Christmas. The Grinch, caught off guard by her kindness, lies and tells her he's taking the decorations to fix them up and bring them back.
On Christmas Day, the Whos wake up to find that all their gifts and decorations are gone. However, instead of being upset, they join together and sing in unison, filling the Grinch's heart with the true meaning of Christmas. Overwhelmed with emotion, the Grinch experiences a change of heart and returns everything he had stolen.
The Whos forgive the Grinch and invite him to celebrate Christmas with them. The once-grumpy Grinch realizes the true joy and spirit of Christmas and is overjoyed to have been a part of it.
