Behrani is a former colonel in the Iranian military who fled to the United States with his family after the Iranian Revolution. He is now working menial jobs in California and is determined to give his son the education he didn't have. He buys the bungalow at a government auction, intending to renovate it and use the profits to pay for his son's education.
However, the county made a mistake in evicting the previous owner, Kathy, who is a recovering drug addict. When she realizes that the county has taken her house, she appeals the decision but is unsuccessful. She becomes increasingly desperate as she has nowhere else to go and no means of support.
Behrani, on the other hand, is proud of his new home and spends all of his savings on renovations. He sees the house as a symbol of his success and status in America. When Kathy tries to reclaim the house, he is unwilling to give it up and starts to see her as a threat to his family's prosperity.
The situation becomes more complicated when a police officer, who develops a friendship with Kathy, becomes involved in the dispute and tries to mediate a solution. Behrani, however, refuses to negotiate and the conflict between them escalates to tragic consequences.
The movie explores themes of identity, belonging, and the American Dream, as well as the legal and moral complexities of property ownership. It also showcases the impressive acting skills of Ben Kingsley, Jennifer Connelly, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.
