Tom Warshaw, now a successful artist living in Paris, receives news that his mother has died. This news prompts him to reflect on his past growing up in Greenwich Village, New York City. He remembers his childhood friend and neighbor, Pappass, a mentally disabled man who acted as his friend and protector.
As Tom navigates his adolescence, he faces the challenges of growing up without his father, who died in a tragic accident. His mother, struggling with depression and grief, is emotionally absent, leaving Tom feeling alone and adrift. He finds solace in spending time with Pappass, who becomes like a father figure to him.
Things begin to unravel when Tom develops a crush on Melissa, a popular girl at school. Pappass becomes jealous and possessive, and starts behaving erratically, causing friction in Tom's relationships with both Melissa and his other friends.
As Tom tries to navigate these complex relationships while dealing with his own grief and confusion, he learns some harsh truths about life and love. Through it all, he finds strength and resilience, and begins to process his past in a way that allows him to move forward in his present.
