Roger Cobb is experiencing writer's block as he tries to work on his novel about his experiences in the Vietnam War. He is also dealing with the aftermath of his recent separation from his wife and the disappearance of his son while visiting his aunt in the same house he now inhabits. The house is filled with strange objects and furnishings from his aunt's career as a horror novelist and filmmaker.
As Cobb tries to focus on his writing, he hears strange noises and sees apparitions in the house. He discovers that the house seems to be haunted by the spirits of his aunt's creations and memories of the war. He also learns that his son was abducted by the malevolent spirits inhabiting the house and must work to bring him back.
With the help of a neighbor, a young boy who is a horror film enthusiast, Cobb confronts the demons of the house. He battles a zombie-like creature, a monstrous hand that comes out of a bathtub, and a malevolent spirit named Big Ben, who is a manifestation of his guilt and trauma from the war.
In the end, Cobb manages to defeat the evil spirits and rescue his son. He also gains inspiration for his writing and finishes his novel. The movie ends with Cobb and his son leaving the house as it crumbles around them, signaling the end of its evil influence over their lives.
