Hot Rod is a 2007 American comedy film directed by Akiva Schaffer and stars Andy Samberg as Rod Kimball, a wannabe stuntman who idolizes Evel Knievel and dreams of one day becoming a legendary stuntman, despite his obvious lack of talent. Rod lives with his mother and her abusive boyfriend, Frank, who constantly belittles him and challenges him to fights.
When Frank is diagnosed with a heart condition and needs a $50,000 operation, Rod decides to do a huge stunt that will finally make him a legend and earn him the money he needs to save Frank's life. Along with his friends, Denise and Dave, Rod begins training for his big jump over 15 school buses, which he plans to perform at the local fairgrounds.
Despite numerous setbacks, including multiple injuries and a falling out with Denise, who had been secretly in love with him, Rod persists in his goal and finally manages to perform the stunt, although it does not go as planned. However, it still earns him the respect and admiration of his community, and he is finally able to stand up to Frank and win the approval of his stepfather.
Hot Rod received mixed reviews upon its release but has since gained a cult following for its offbeat humor and surrealism. It features memorable performances from Samberg, Isla Fisher, and Bill Hader, as well as a hilarious cameo from Danny McBride as an over-the-top stunt coordinator.
