Kazuki Miyaichi, the protagonist, lives in a small town in Japan with her single mother. Though her mother loves her, she seems distant and uninterested in Kazuki's life. Kazuki feels like she's a burden on her mother, and has stopped trying to connect with her.
Kazuki's only friend is Eri, a transfer student who's also new to the town. Eri introduces Kazuki to Hiroshi Haruyama, who is known for his rebellious and wild nature. Hiroshi is a member of the "Nights," a local motorcycle gang, and he and Kazuki begin to spend more and more time together.
As Kazuki becomes more involved with the Nights and Hiroshi, she feels like she's found a group where she belongs. Despite her anxiety and feelings of worthlessness, Kazuki begins to feel alive when she's with Hiroshi and the other members of the Nights.
However, tensions rise between the Nights and a rival gang, the Skulls. Hiroshi becomes the leader of the Nights, and the conflict between the two gangs escalates. Despite her misgivings, Kazuki stays loyal to Hiroshi and the Nights, even when it means putting herself in danger.
Hot Road is a coming-of-age story about a young girl's search for love and acceptance. It's also a story about how far one will go to belong to a group, and the consequences of that desire.
