Claudia's family is an eccentric bunch that includes her parents, Adele (Anne Bancroft) and Henry (Charles Durning), her sister Joanne (Cynthia Stevenson), and her brother Tommy (Robert Downey Jr.). As soon as Claudia arrives, she is overwhelmed by their familial dysfunction, including Adele's overbearing behavior, Joanne's perfectionism, and Tommy's drug addiction.

The situation becomes even more chaotic when Claudia's high school crush Leo Fish (Dylan McDermott), who she had a one-night stand with before leaving Baltimore years ago, shows up at the house. Despite Claudia's initial reluctance, Leo and Claudia start seeing each other again and gradually rediscover the connections they once had.

Throughout the film, Claudia navigates her family's eccentricities and tensions while also struggling with her own personal demons and insecurities. She ultimately realizes that, despite their flaws, her family is a source of love and support that she can always rely on.
