In Hollywood or Bust, Jerry Lewis plays Steve Wiley, a con artist who spends his days leeching off the kindness of strangers. One day, he hits the jackpot when he convinces a man named Malcolm Smith (played by Dean Martin) that they both won a brand new car. In reality, Steve is lying, and he doesn't have any claim to the vehicle. However, he can't resist the temptation to try and steal it from Malcolm.
When Malcolm finds out that Steve lives in Hollywood, he insists that they go there together to pick up the car. Steve agrees, figuring that he can use the trip to try and swindle some more people. Along the way, they meet a beautiful blonde named Terry Roberts (Pat Crowley) who becomes the object of both men's affections.
As they make their way to Hollywood, Steve's schemes become increasingly outlandish. For instance, he tries to steal Malcolm's wallet and passport so that he can forge documents to sell in Tijuana. He also tries to seduce Terry, despite knowing that Malcom has feelings for her.
Throughout the movie, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin's effortless chemistry makes their antics feel fresh and entertaining. The film also features a number of cameos from famous Hollywood personalities, including Anita Ekberg, who gets a mention early in the movie. Overall, Hollywood or Bust is a charming, lighthearted satire of the movie business that's a fitting swan song for one of Hollywood's most iconic comedic duos.
