H.M.S. Defiant, also known as "Damn the Defiant!" in the United States, is a 1962 British naval drama film directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde. The story is set in the year 1797, and it follows the crew of the British ship Defiant, led by Captain Crawford (Guinness) and first officer Lt. Scott-Padget (Bogarde).

The crew has been ordered to sail to the West Indies to take part in a blockade against the French, but they are also part of a larger movement among the British naval crews to present a petition of grievances to the Admiralty. However, Lt. Scott-Padget is a sadistic officer who abuses the crew and makes their job even more difficult.

Things come to a head when Captain Crawford is severely wounded during a battle with a French ship, and Lt. Scott-Padget takes command of the Defiant. He orders the injured captain to be put ashore and continues to mistreat the crew. This leads to growing tension among the sailors, and some of them begin to consider violence as a means of getting their message across.

The film is a complex exploration of the tensions between authority and rebellion, and the difficult choices that people must make when faced with abuse and injustice. It features outstanding performances by Guinness and Bogarde, as well as a strong supporting cast that includes Anthony Quayle, Tom Bell, and Maurice Denham.

Overall, H.M.S. Defiant is a compelling historical drama that explores timeless themes and packs plenty of action and intrigue into its story. It is a must-see for fans of classic British cinema and naval stories.
