In the film, Hildy is a talented and ambitious journalist who was once married to Walter Burns, her former boss. Despite their history, Hildy is ready to move on and start a new life with Bruce Baldwin, an earnest but dull insurance agent.
Walter, however, is not willing to let Hildy go so easily. He sees her departure as a threat to his newspaper and his own position of power. To keep her from leaving, he hatches a plan to disrupt Hildy's plans with Bruce and lure her back to the world of journalism.
Walter first tries to win Hildy back with flattery and promises of a promotion, but when that fails, he turns to more devious measures. He convinces Bruce to take on a risky assignment that lands him in jail, and then manipulates various legal authorities to keep him locked up for as long as possible.
Meanwhile, Walter and Hildy are thrown back together as they work to cover the story of Bruce's imprisonment. As they reunite as reporters, old feelings begin to resurface. Hildy begins to realize that she misses the fast-paced, exciting world of journalism and that she might still have feelings for Walter.
As the tension builds, the characters race against time to discover the truth behind Bruce's incarceration and to save his reputation. Ultimately, Walter's scheme is exposed, and Hildy must decide between her past life with Walter and her future with Bruce. In the end, she chooses love over career and sets out to start a new life with her fiancé.
