Highlander is a 1986 film directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman who has lived for hundreds of years. The film opens in the Scottish Highlands in 1536, where MacLeod is mortally wounded in battle only to miraculously recover and discover that he is immortal. He is banished from his village by his fellow clansmen who believe he is possessed by the devil.
Fast forward to New York City in 1985, where MacLeod lives a quiet life under the alias of Russell Nash. He is involved in a swordfight with another immortal, the villainous Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown), and ultimately decapitates him, taking his power as the last surviving immortal. Throughout the film, MacLeod must contend with the interference of the Kurgan and navigate his relationships with other immortals, including his former mentor Ramirez (played by Sean Connery) and Kurgan's ally, the seductive and dangerous immortal, Brenda Wyatt (played by Roxanne Hart).
The film is known for its iconic soundtrack by rock band Queen and the iconic catchphrase "There can be only one." It was a commercial success and spawned several sequels, a television series, and a franchise that continues to this day. Highlander reflects on themes such as love, morality, and the price of immortality, making it a timeless classic in the sci-fi and fantasy genre.
