After surviving an attack during a camping trip, Rebecca (played by Emily Blunt) returns home to her parents' luxurious island estate, struggling with amnesia. Her concerned parents, Anne (played by Meryl Streep) and Robert (played by Tom Hanks), and her longtime friend, Sarah (played by Emma Stone), welcome her with open arms and try to help her piece her memories back together.
As she slowly starts to remember bits and pieces of the attack, Rebecca becomes convinced that the person who killed her friend and hurt her is still out there, and she sets out to find the truth. Her investigation leads her down a dangerous path, as she uncovers dark secrets and hidden agendas in her own family and among their circle of wealthy friends.
With the help of a private detective, Jack (played by Chris Pine), who also lost a loved one in a similar attack, Rebecca begins to unravel the mystery and uncovers a shocking truth about her own past. As she gets closer to the killer, she becomes the target of their wrath once again, and she must fight for her own survival and clear her name.
