Love and Heroism in the Navy

War,Drama  United States of America

Here Comes the Navy is a 1934 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Lloyd Bacon and starring James Cagney, May Robson, and Pat O'Brien. The film tells the story of Navy man "Chesty" O'Conner (James Cagney) who joins the United States Navy after being dared by a beautiful woman named Dorothy (Gloria Stuart) whom he meets at a party.

Initially, Chesty joins the Navy solely to prove himself to Dorothy, but he soon finds himself falling for a Navy nurse named Droopy (Pat O'Brien). To complicate matters, Dorothy also joins the Navy as a Yeoman (F) and tries to win Chesty back.

Throughout the film, Chesty gets into various mishaps and conflicts with his superiors, but he also proves himself to be brave and resourceful during a crisis. He saves several lives when a ship catches fire, and later helps rescue a group of sailors trapped on a submerged submarine.

In the end, Chesty and Droopy fall in love, and Chesty realizes that he truly wants to serve in the Navy for the right reasons. He is cited for his heroism twice and is promoted to a higher rank.

Here Comes the Navy was a commercial success, and it helped solidify James Cagney's status as a leading actor. The film also prominently features the U.S. Navy and was made with the cooperation of the Navy Department, helping to boost recruitment during a time of increased tension in Europe.
