The young woman, named Kirsty Cotton, is trying to separate herself from her abusive and controlling stepmother and her troubled past. She comes across the puzzle box, which had belonged to her estranged uncle Frank, and decides to solve it out of curiosity.
However, when Kirsty solves the box, she unknowingly opens a portal to the dimension of the Cenobites, demonic entities that are summoned to fulfill the desires of those who solve the puzzle box. The Cenobites are led by Pinhead, a demonic figure with a grid-like pattern of nails on his head and a penchant for causing pain and suffering.
Kirsty discovers that her uncle Frank had solved the puzzle box before her and had become a victim of the Cenobites, who turned him into a grotesque, skinless monster. Kirsty soon becomes entangled in a battle for survival against the sadistic Cenobites, who are intent on claiming her soul.
As the film progresses, Kirsty learns more about the Cenobites and their motivations, and must outsmart and defeat them in order to save herself and those she cares about. The film is notable for its graphic violence and startling practical effects, as well as its exploration of addiction and the human desire for pleasure and pain.
