Hell Is for Heroes is a 1962 war drama film directed by Don Siegel and starring Steve McQueen, Bobby Darin, Fess Parker, Harry Guardino, and James Coburn. The film is set in 1944, during the Battle of the Siegfried Line in World War II.

The story revolves around a small group of tired and under-equipped American soldiers who are ordered back to the front line to hold off the German forces. The soldiers are led by the tough Sergeant Larkin (Harry Guardino) and include Reese (Steve McQueen), a rebellious soldier who likes to play by his own rules.

As they set out to defend their position, the squad discovers that they are facing a heavily fortified German pillbox on the other side of a minefield. In order to trick the Germans into thinking that they have a larger force, the squad uses various tactics to make noise and create confusion.

Despite their best efforts, the Germans eventually realize that the Americans are weak and decide to launch a full-scale attack. In the ensuing battle, half of the squad is killed, including the two soldiers who had bravely attempted to take the pillbox.

Reese is then threatened with court-martial for his unauthorized attack, but instead of facing dishonor, he decides to launch a solo mission to take out the pillbox. The film reaches its climax as Reese bravely charges towards the pillbox, dodging bullets and grenades as he goes.

Hell Is for Heroes is a tense and gritty war film that showcases the bravery and tenacity of the American soldiers during World War II. The film was well received by both audiences and critics, with special praise given to Steve McQueen's performance as Reese.
