Clay Santell is a cowboy who is traveling to meet his girlfriend, but he stops in the town of Sutterville after his horse is stolen. The townspeople mistake him for a notorious outlaw named Travers and capture him. They turn him over to Harry Deckett, the town's lawman, who is exhausted from chasing Travers for years.
Deckett decides to take matters into his own hands and kill Santell, passing him off as Travers to finally collect the reward money. Santell manages to escape from Deckett's clutches, taking Janet Gifford, a local woman, as hostage in the process.
Janet is at first afraid of Santell, but as she hears his story and realizes he is not really Travers, she grows sympathetic to his plight. Together, they set out to prove Santell's real identity and clear his name.
As they journey across the countryside, they encounter various obstacles and dangers, including a gang of outlaws who are also after Travers. Santell and Janet must work together to outsmart their pursuers and reach their goal of proving Santell's innocence.
Ultimately, Santell is able to clear his name and reunite with his girlfriend, while Janet develops a newfound respect and admiration for the cowboy who turned out to be much different than she had initially assumed.
