Hector, played by Simon Pegg, sets out on a journey to find the secret to happiness. He travels to various destinations, including China, Africa, and Los Angeles, where he meets different people and experiences different cultures. Along the way, Hector keeps a journal where he writes down his findings about happiness.
In China, Hector learns about the importance of meditation and inner peace. In Africa, he discovers that money cannot buy happiness when he meets an impoverished and happy tribe. In Los Angeles, he befriends a wealthy businessman, played by Stellan Skarsgård, who teaches him the importance of taking risks.
Hector's journey is not without its challenges. While in Africa, he is kidnapped by a drug lord and is forced to confront his fears. In China, he falls in love with a woman who he later realizes is married. These experiences ultimately lead Hector to realize that happiness is not a destination but a state of mind.
The film also stars Rosamund Pike as Hector's girlfriend, Clara, and Christopher Plummer as a wise professor who provides Hector with guidance throughout his journey. The movie is directed by Peter Chelsom and based on the novel "Hector and the Search for Happiness" by François Lelord.
