Heavy Metal is a Canadian-American animated anthology film released in 1981. The film is based on the cult science-fiction and fantasy magazine Heavy Metal and features several different stories of dark fantasy, eroticism, and horror.
The film centers around a glowing orb which contains the key to the universe's ultimate power. The orb travels through space and creates chaos and destruction wherever it goes. The orb eventually falls into the hands of a young girl, who is terrorized by it and forced to confront its dark power.
The film is composed of several stories that are loosely connected by the theme of the orb. The stories include:
- Soft Landing: An astronaut on a mission to retrieve the orb is stranded on a distant planet and taken captive by a group of alien women.

- Den: A nerd is transported to a strange world where he must fight to save a beautiful princess from an evil sorcerer.
- Captain Sternn: A corrupt space captain is put on trial for a litany of crimes, but has a devious plan to escape justice.
- B-17: A crew of World War II bomber pilots are haunted by a mysterious presence on their plane.
- Taarna: A warrior woman must defend a peaceful civilization from an army of mutants.
The film features an eclectic soundtrack that includes songs by Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, and more. Heavy Metal has become a cult classic and is known for its stunning visuals, graphic violence, and eroticism.
