Hearts of the West is a lighthearted comedy about a young man named Lewis Tater who dreams of becoming a famous Western novelist. Lewis leaves his Iowa farm behind and heads to Nevada to attend a writing correspondence course. Once he arrives, he discovers that the school is a fraud, and he is forced to flee from a group of con men who are after him.
On the run, Lewis stumbles upon a group of "real" cowboys who are shooting a movie in the desert. He joins the group and soon finds himself in Depression-era Hollywood, working for Tumbleweed Productions, a rundown studio that specializes in Westerns.
As Lewis becomes immersed in the world of filmmaking, he develops relationships with the other actors on set, including a beautiful leading lady named Miss Trout. Lewis also begins to learn the ins and outs of the movie industry, including the behind-the-scenes tricks used to create spectacular stunts and action sequences.
Throughout his journey, Lewis remains focused on his dream of becoming a successful Western novelist. As he navigates the ups and downs of his new life in Hollywood, he must overcome obstacles and stay true to himself and his aspirations.
