Hearts and Bones

Drama  Australia

Hearts and Bones is a 2019 Australian drama film directed by Ben Lawrence and written by Lawrence and Beatrix Christian. The film stars Hugo Weaving as Dan, a war photographer who is struggling to come to terms with the trauma he has experienced while reporting from conflict zones in Africa. As he tries to adjust to life at home, his wife is pregnant with their first child and he is struggling to connect with her.

Meanwhile, a Sudanese refugee named Sebastian (Andrew Luri) is starting a new life in Australia. He has a wife and baby daughter and is working to build a better future for them. However, his past catches up with him when he sees one of Dan's photographs in a newspaper. The image shows dead bodies in a war-ravaged village that Sebastian recognizes as his own. He fears that it will put his family in danger and he seeks out Dan to ask him to not publish the photo.

As Dan and Sebastian reconnect, they must confront the trauma they have each experienced and find a way to move forward. The film explores themes of trauma, family, race, and the power of images to both heal and harm. It received critical acclaim for its powerful performances and nuanced storytelling.
