The man, Will, is a single and successful apple farmer who is used to living a solitary life in the beautiful countryside of New England. His world is turned upside down when a 16-year-old girl, Lily, shows up on his doorstep claiming to be his daughter. Lily's mother, who Will had a brief fling with in college, had kept the truth from him all these years.
Will tries to adjust to life with a teenage daughter and is surprised by how much he enjoys spending time with her. However, Lily is struggling to come to terms with the loss of her mother and the sudden upheaval in her life. To make matters worse, she's also dealing with a broken heart after her boyfriend back in the city broke up with her.
Lily finds solace in the horses on Will's farm and becomes particularly drawn to a beautiful and spirited mare named Luna. Will, who has never been a horse person, initially resists Lily's pleas to take care of the horse, but eventually gives in.
As Lily spends more time with Luna, she begins to feel like herself again and opens up to her father about her pain and struggles. Will, who has never been good at expressing his emotions, starts to understand his daughter and learns to be a better parent.
As the summer progresses, Will and Lily develop a strong bond, and Lily begins to see a future for herself on the farm with her dad and Luna. But when Lily's absentee mother's estranged family shows up, wanting to take her away from Will and her new life, they will have to fight for the future they have built together.
