Hear Me

Drama,Romance  Taiwan

Hear Me is a Taiwanese romantic drama film released in 2009, directed by Fen-fen Cheng. The story revolves around a delivery boy named Tian Kuo (Eddie Peng) and a girl named Yang Yang (Ivy Chen), who is deaf and communicates through sign language. Tian Kuo meets Yang Yang when he delivers a package to her family's restaurant, and he is immediately drawn to her. As the two interact more, they soon develop feelings for each other.

However, their relationship faces several challenges, primarily due to their communication barrier. Despite not being able to hear, Yang Yang is an excellent lip-reader and can communicate through writing and sign language. Nevertheless, Tian Kuo struggles to learn sign language, which creates several misunderstandings between the two. Additionally, the disapproval of Yang Yang's mother, who feels Tian Kuo is too immature and uneducated for her daughter, adds further complications.

The movie uses various visual metaphors to represent the relationship between Tian Kuo and Yang Yang. For instance, they compare themselves to swans and trees - just like swans find their mates and stick to them for life, Tian Kuo and Yang Yang vow to be together forever. Trees, on the other hand, symbolize resilience and stability, reflecting their determination to weather any obstacle that comes their way.

As the story progresses, Tian Kuo starts taking his life and education more seriously, which earns him the trust and respect of Yang Yang's mother. Meanwhile, Yang Yang's brother, a professional baseball player, mentors him in baseball. This not only helps him connect better with Yang Yang, who is also a fan of the sport, but also enables him to pursue his dream of becoming a baseball player. Eventually, Tian Kuo and Yang Yang confess their love for each other, and the movie ends on a heartwarming note.

Hear Me was widely acclaimed for its portrayal of deaf characters and their lives. The movie won several awards, including the Audience Award at Taipei Film Festival and Best Musical Score at the Golden Horse Awards.
