The family in Hate Crime consists of Jewish parents, Sarah and David, and their three children - a teenage daughter, a preteen son, and a young toddler. They have just moved to a new neighborhood hoping for a fresh start but their celebration takes a dark turn when a group of Neo-Nazi extremists break in and terrorize the family.
The group of invaders, who are high on crystal meth, are led by a man named Mike, who specifically targets the family because of their Jewish heritage. They beat David mercilessly, and sexually assault Sarah while the children are made to watch.
