Wyatt spends most of his days sleeping or writing articles for a small-time newspaper, but he has never been able to land a big story. When he meets Fern, he is initially dismissive of her quirky and secretive nature, but he becomes intrigued when he discovers that she is on a quest to find her missing father.

The two set out in Fern's beat-up Toyota and begin collecting clues about her father's whereabouts. Along the way, they encounter a cast of characters, including a group of homeless people living in a makeshift campsite, a shady pawnshop owner who may have information about Fern's dad, and a pair of street musicians who offer them shelter for a night.

As they navigate the gritty underbelly of the city, Wyatt and Fern grow closer, and their relationship becomes more than just a platonic friendship. Wyatt, who has been burned by love before, is hesitant to pursue anything serious with Fern, but he finds himself drawn to her adventurous spirit and dauntless determination.

Eventually, they uncover a shocking truth about Fern's father's disappearance, and Wyatt becomes embroiled in a dangerous situation that threatens both his career and his life. With Fern's help, he must decide whether to risk everything to pursue the story of a lifetime or to leave it all behind and start a new life with the woman he loves.
