Harriet M. Welsch is an 11-year-old girl who aspires to be a writer and a spy. She keeps a notebook filled with observations on her friends, classmates, and family members, which she considers as her spy route. However, when her friends find her notebook and read her unflattering thoughts about them, they turn against her. Harriet becomes an outcast at school, and even her former best friend, Janie Gibbs, refuses to speak to her.
Feeling alone and betrayed, Harriet turns to her nanny, Golly, for solace. Golly encourages Harriet to apologize to her friends and make amends, but Harriet is too stubborn and proud to consider it. She continues to spy on her friends, hoping to find out who might be plotting against her.
As the days go by, Harriet realizes that her spying has caused her to overlook the good qualities of her friends and family. She also starts to understand the importance of honesty and empathy in relationships. With the help of Golly, she learns to see things from other people's perspectives and tries to make things right.
In the end, Harriet uses her writing and spy skills to expose a thief who has been stealing from her class. With this heroic act, Harriet wins back the respect of her friends and the trust of her loved ones. She also becomes more humble and compassionate, realizing that being a spy is not always the answer to her problems.
