Harlequin, also known as Dark Forces, is a 1980 Australian film directed by Simon Wincer. The film is loosely based on the story of the Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, but set in the modern-day political world of Australia.

David Hemmings stars as Nick Rast, a rising political figure whose career is being guided by corrupt businessman and powerbroker Doc Wheelan (Robert Helpmann). Rast's son Alex (Mark Spain) has leukemia, and his wife Sandy (Carmen Duncan) becomes desperate for a cure.

Enter the enigmatic faith healer Gregory Wolfe (played with menacing charm by Robert Powell), who mysteriously cures Alex's illness. Wolfe becomes a fixture in the Rast household, and quickly gains Sandy's affection. Meanwhile, Wheelan becomes increasingly concerned as Wolfe's influence over the Rasts grows.

As the election approaches, Wheelan decides to take matters into his own hands and attempts to assassinate Wolfe. The attempt fails, but the stress causes Wolfe to reveal his true intentions: he is actually the spirit of Alex's dead twin brother, who has returned to seek revenge on the corrupt adults who caused his death.

Harlequin received mixed reviews upon its release, but has since gained a cult following for its stylish direction, performances, and eerie atmosphere. The film's soundtrack, composed by Brian May (not to be confused with the guitarist of Queen), is also highly regarded.
