In Hardcore, Jake Van Dorn (played by George C. Scott) is a successful businessman and conservative Christian from Grand Rapids, Michigan. When his teenage daughter Kristen (played by Ilah Davis) goes missing during a trip to Los Angeles, he hires a private investigator to track her down. The investigator tells Jake that Kristen has been seen in a series of pornographic films, and that she may be involved in illegal and dangerous activities.
Desperate to find his daughter, Jake travels to Los Angeles and enters the seedy world of pornography, where he finds himself surrounded by drug addicts, pimps, and other unsavory characters. With the help of a sympathetic sex worker named Niki (played by Season Hubley), Jake begins to learn more about the seedy world of porn, and discovers that Kristen may be involved in a dangerous cult that is exploiting young women.
As Jake delves deeper into the world of porn, he becomes increasingly disillusioned with his own moral beliefs, and begins to question his own sense of identity and purpose. He is forced to confront his own prejudices and biases as he uncovers the truth about his daughter's disappearance, and he must decide whether to embrace his newfound understanding of the world or return to his old life in Grand Rapids.
Hardcore was directed by Paul Schrader and released in 1979. The film received mixed reviews upon its release, but has since become a cult classic and is regarded as one of Schrader's best films. The film's themes of moral ambiguity, sexual exploitation, and the corruption of power remain relevant and thought-provoking to this day.
