The two escaped convicts, Harry Sawyer (played by Jeremy Northam) and Wayne Wayne Jr. (played by Steve Zahn) are posing as pageant consultants for the Little Miss Fresh Squeezed beauty pageant in Happy, Texas. They are tasked with coaching the young contestants, who are all excited to have "the gays" in town.
As they continue to blend in with the community, Harry develops feelings for the local teacher, Josephine (played by Ally Walker), while Wayne becomes close with the pageant organizer, Rhonda (played by Illeana Douglas). However, their identities are threatened when the real pageant consultants show up, and they must work together to maintain their facade.
Meanwhile, the town's sheriff, Chappy Dent (played by William H. Macy), is struggling with his own secret longing for Josephine. As he works closely with Harry and Wayne on the pageant, he must confront his feelings and decide whether or not to come out.
As the day of the pageant approaches, the truth is revealed, and Harry and Wayne must face the consequences of their criminal pasts. However, they also leave a positive impact on the town, teaching the young girls about self-confidence and acceptance, and bringing Chappy closer to embracing his true identity.
