Happy Christmas is a 2014 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Joe Swanberg. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham, and Joe Swanberg himself.
The film opens with Jenny (Anna Kendrick) breaking up with her boyfriend. She's looking for a change and decides to move in with her older brother Jeff (Joe Swanberg), his wife Kelly (Melanie Lynskey), and their 2-year-old son Jude (Jude Swanberg) in Chicago. Jenny is an irresponsible 27-year-old who is struggling to figure out her life and what she wants to do with it.
Kelly is a stay-at-home mom who is trying to balance taking care of her son and getting her novel published. She's also dealing with her own marital issues with Jeff, who is a struggling filmmaker. Jenny's arrival shakes things up in the household, and Kelly is hesitant to welcome her in.
Jenny quickly bonds with Kelly's friend, Carson (Lena Dunham), who is a free-spirited novelist and party girl. Together, they start to cause chaos in Jeff and Kelly's home, resulting in Kelly and Jeff fighting even more.
As the film progresses, the relationship between Jenny and Kelly starts to grow, and Jenny begins to mature and gain a sense of responsibility. She even starts to help Kelly with her novel, and they begin to share a deeper connection.
In the end, Jenny realizes that she needs to figure out her own life and moves out of Jeff and Kelly's home. The film ends with Jeff and Kelly starting to mend their relationship, and Jenny leaving Chicago to start a new chapter in her life.
