Rachel Carson (played by Demi Moore) is a successful crime novelist who is grieving the loss of her son, who drowned while playing on the beach. Her grief becomes too much to bear, and she decides to leave the city and move to a small village in Scotland, where a friend has offered her a vacant house to stay in.
Rachel quickly becomes part of the small community, and strikes up a relationship with a local man named Angus (played by Hans Matheson). But soon, strange things start happening in the house. Rachel begins to see the ghostly figure of a woman in white, and hears whispers and sounds that cannot be explained.
As Rachel's relationship with Angus deepens, she begins to question her own sanity. She confides in a local woman who is well-versed in folklore, and learns that the area has a long history of hauntings and supernatural occurrences.
Despite her doubts and fears, Rachel continues to investigate the ghostly presence in the house. She discovers that the woman in white is a local woman who drowned in the sea years ago, and who has been unable to move on from her life.
The film culminates in a dramatic showdown with the ghostly presence, as Rachel confronts the woman in white and tries to help her move on from her past. In the end, Rachel finds closure for her own grief, and begins to move on with her life.
