Drama,Action,War  United Kingdom

Guns at Batasi is a 1964 British drama film directed by John Guillermin and starring Richard Attenborough, Flora Robson, John Leyton, Jack Hawkins, and Mia Farrow.

The film is set in the fictitious African country of Batasi, where a coup d'etat has taken place. The British Army detachment stationed at Batasi is now vulnerable, and it's up to the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Lauderdale (Richard Attenborough), a traditionalist with an unwavering dedication to army discipline and protocol, to take charge and protect his men and civilians.

As the situation becomes increasingly volatile, Lauderdale is forced to fight against the rebel forces and negotiate with the local leaders to secure safety for his group. However, his methods clash with those of Captain Abraham (Jack Hawkins), who is more interested in ensuring the safety of the colonial power's interest.

Meanwhile, an American journalist (Mia Farrow) is stranded with the group and helps shine a light on the situation in Batasi to the outside world.

The tension builds up as the Army detachment tries to hold on to their position while atrocities are committed by the coup's leaders. In the end, RSM Lauderdale is able to use his experience and dedication to his men to ensure their survival and victory over the rebel forces.

Guns at Batasi was a critical success upon its release and received several award nominations. It was praised for its portrayal of the role of the British Army in colonial Africa and the dilemmas that come with defending colonial powers on the brink of independence.
