The Sheriff's Burden: A Tale of Redemption and Retribution

Western  United States of America

The man in question is named Jim Trask, and he's played by Bobby Darin. After accidentally killing his friend during the Civil War, Trask returns to Abilene to try and start a new life. He meets up with his former sweetheart, Peggy Bigelow (played by Emily Banks), and discovers that she's engaged to marry the brother of the man he killed, Clay (played by Leslie Nielsen). Trask tries to convince Peggy to leave Clay, but she refuses, and Trask decides to let her go.

Trask takes a job as the town sheriff, even though he doesn't want the position, because Clay asks him to. Trask tries to maintain peace between the ranchers and farmers, but tensions continue to mount. When Clay is murdered, Trask takes up a gun and sets out to find the killer. He discovers that the murderer is Clay's own foreman, Duryea (played by Donnelly Rhodes), who was secretly in love with Peggy and jealous of Clay.

Trask and Duryea engage in a tense showdown, which ends with Trask killing Duryea in self-defense. In the end, Trask decides to leave town and start fresh, but not before telling Peggy that he still loves her and hopes she can find happiness. The film was directed by William Hale and released in 1967.
