Reviving the Soviet Super-Hero Squad

Action,Fantasy,Science Fiction  Russia

"Guardians" is a Russian superhero movie released in 2017 and directed by Sarik Andreasyan. The story is set during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. To counter American superheroes, the government creates the "Patriot" project, which aims to enhance human abilities and transform ordinary people into superhumans.

The project is led by Professor August Kuratov (played by Stanislav Shirin) and involves recruiting individuals from various Soviet republics. The team includes four members, each with their unique powers: Arsus (Anton Pampushnyy), a werebear; Khan (Sanjar Madi), who has super-speed and a sword; Ler (Sebastien Sisak), who can control rocks and metals; and Kseniya (Alina Lanina), who can turn invisible and control electricity.

After years of serving their country, the heroes are forced to go into hiding when the Soviet Union collapses. However, some years later, a villainous Kuratov resurfaces and tries to take control of the country by creating a new army of superhumans. The original Guardians must come out of hiding and reunite to stop Kuratov and save the country once again.

The movie features high-octane action sequences, visual effects, and a unique blend of Soviet-era nostalgia and modern superhero movie tropes. Although it did not receive much attention outside Russia, "Guardians" was a significant box office success in the country, leading to talks of a potential sequel.
