Gringo is a comedic action-thriller film directed by Nash Edgerton and written by Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone. The movie follows the story of Harold Soyinka, a mild-mannered pharmaceutical executive who is sent to Mexico to oversee the manufacturing facility of his company's latest cannabis pill. Harold is already stressed enough about the upcoming IPO of his company, but things take a turn for the worse when he is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. Little does he know, his own bosses and colleagues have orchestrated the controversy to gain control of the upcoming IPO and potentially sell their company for a massive profit.
As Harold struggles to survive and fight off the dangerous criminals, he enlists the help of an old acquaintance and black ops agent, Richard Rusk, and a mercenary named Mitch. Meanwhile, Harold's wife Bonnie is dealing with her own set of problems as she discovers her husband's web of lies and infidelities. Together, the unlikely trio navigates the dangerous and unpredictable situation, relying on each other to keep themselves alive while trying to piece together the convoluted scheme orchestrated by Harold's own company.
Gringo features an all-star cast including David Oyelowo as Harold, Charlize Theron as his conniving boss Elaine, Joel Edgerton as Harold's duplicitous colleague Richard Rusk, Amanda Seyfried as a financial advisor, and Thandie Newton as Harold's wife Bonnie. The film received mixed reviews for its tonal shifts and convoluted plot, but praised for its talented cast and thrilling action sequences.
