After receiving the Mogwai from his father's antique shop, Billy befriends the creature and names him Gizmo. However, he soon learns that there are three rules that must be followed in order to care for a Mogwai: do not expose it to bright light, do not get it wet, and never feed it after midnight.
Despite knowing the rules, Billy's friend accidentally spills water on Gizmo, which causes him to spawn five new Mogwai, who are mischievous and disobedient. After being tricked into eating after midnight, the five Mogwai turn into ugly, aggressive, green creatures known as gremlins.
The gremlins begin to wreak havoc on the small town, causing chaos and destruction everywhere they go. Billy and his girlfriend, Kate, work together to try and stop the gremlins before they cause any more damage.
In a final showdown, Billy and Gizmo defeat the gremlins, and the town returns to its normal state. The movie ends with Billy giving Gizmo to his former owner, who is a more responsible caretaker.
