Clive Owen stars as Colin Briggs, a man who has spent most of his adult life in prison for a violent crime. As he enters the experimental "open" prison, he is skeptical of the new approach to rehabilitation. However, he finds solace in the prison garden and discovers he has a natural talent for growing flowers.
Under the guidance of the prison's gardening guru, Georgina Woodhouse (played by Helen Mirren), Colin and four other inmates become passionate about horticulture and working together to create a stunning garden. When they receive an invitation to enter the prestigious Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, they see it as an opportunity to prove their worth and make a name for themselves.
As they prepare for the competition, the group faces a variety of challenges, both personal and societal. Some of the other inmates see their newfound passion as a weakness and try to bring them down, while the rigid attitudes of some of the garden show judges threaten to undermine their efforts. Colin also struggles with his troubled past and resists the possibility of a genuine connection with the kind-hearted Georgina.
Ultimately, the group's hard work and determination pay off, and they are able to create a garden that wins the hearts of the judges and the larger public. Along the way, they also learn important lessons about working together, overcoming personal obstacles, and finding a sense of purpose and redemption through nature.
