Brontë Mitchell is an urban horticulturalist living in New York City who is desperate for a spacious and bright apartment with a greenhouse. She finds the perfect one, but the landlord will only rent it to a married couple. In order to get the apartment, Brontë decides to enter into a sham marriage with Georges Fauré, a French waiter who needs a green card to stay in the United States.
At first, the arrangement seems simple enough: Brontë and Georges simply need to prove to the immigration authorities that they are a real couple. However, their differences quickly become apparent to one another, and they begin to clash constantly. Georges is messy and irresponsible, while Brontë is uptight and detail-oriented.
As they try to maintain the facade of a happy marriage, Brontë and Georges begin to learn more about each other and start to develop genuine feelings for one another. However, their relationship is threatened by the fact that they are engaged in a fraudulent scheme and could be deported at any moment.
As their marriage starts to unravel, Brontë and Georges must decide whether they should stay together for the sake of the green card, or whether their marriage was never meant to be in the first place.
