Driving through a Divided South

Drama,Comedy,Music  United States of America

Green Book is a historical comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly. The movie is based on the real-life story of Tony Lip and Don Shirley, who embark on a challenging and eye-opening road trip through the Deep South. Tony Lip, played by Viggo Mortensen, is a rough, street-smart Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx who is struggling to make ends meet when he is offered a job as a driver for Don Shirley, played by Mahershala Ali, a talented pianist who happens to be black.

The movie is set in the early 1960s, a time when segregation laws were still in place in many parts of the United States. The two unlikely companions set off on a tour of the Deep South, with Tony Lip acting as Don Shirley's bodyguard and driver. Along the way, they encounter racism, prejudice, and adversity, from both white and black communities.

To navigate their journey, Tony Lip uses The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guidebook that listed safe places for black travelers to eat, sleep, and stay in the segregated South. Don Shirley, who is used to living in luxury and being treated like a celebrity, finds it difficult to cope with the racism and discrimination he faces along the way.

Despite their differences, Tony Lip and Don Shirley develop a deep bond and mutual respect for each other on their journey. Through their experiences, they both learn about the power of acceptance, understanding, and friendship.

The movie received critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. It is a powerful and timely reminder of the importance of empathy and compassion in the face of adversity and prejudice.
