Grave Encounters is a found footage horror film that follows the crew of a fictional paranormal reality show called Grave Encounters as they investigate a supposedly haunted psychiatric hospital called Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. The crew, led by host Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson), include camera operator Matt White (Juan Riedinger), tech specialist Sasha Parker (Ashleigh Gryzko), psychic medium Houston Gray (Mackenzie Gray), and production assistant T.C. Gibson (Merwin Mondesir).
As they begin their investigation, they set up their equipment and conduct interviews with locals who claim to have witnessed paranormal activity at the hospital. However, as they spend more time inside the building, they start experiencing unexplainable phenomena, leading them to believe that they have finally found proof of the supernatural. Soon, they discover that the hospital's dark history and the malevolent forces within are far more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.
As the night goes on, the crew becomes trapped inside the hospital with no way out. Doors and windows that were previously open are now sealed shut, and the exits lead them in circles. Strange noises and inexplicable events begin to intensify, leading the team to realize that they may not be alone in the hospital. Their equipment starts to malfunction, and they are unable to communicate with the outside world. The crew soon realizes that they are not investigating a haunted location but rather being held captive in a paranormal dimension.
As the night wears on, the crew slowly begins to unravel. They are confronted with ghosts and other supernatural entities, which slowly start picking them off one by one. As they begin to realize the danger they're in, the crew members try to make their escape but are only met with more terrifying obstacles and horrific visions.
Finally, after realizing that they are never going to escape, Lance Preston decides to continue filming as the crew is attacked by the malevolent force in the building. After the final member of the Grave Encounters team is killed, the cameras go to black and the footage ends. Only the found footage remains, and it is played back on screen, showing the final moments of the crew's terrifying ordeal. The film ends with a disclaimer that the crew of Grave Encounters has never been seen or heard from since, and the footage remains unexplained.
